“I’m nervous to tell you that I’ve lost weight”
-current client.
This is the 3rd time a client has told me this.
& I always reassure them-
“HOLY CRAP- PLEASE don’t ever be nervous/afraid to tell me anything-
Unless it’s like needing help to hide a body, then I’ll for sure be reporting you to the authorities.”
-
I am VERY up front with my clients in the initial phone consult about my approach-
I tell them,
“I will NOT be having you take before pictures, asking for your weight of measurements- and I will not push ANY specific diet during this time. My focus is movement and providing you with safe guidance to do so, weight loss is NOT something I guarantee NOR do I focus on.”
-
I also tell them that if that’s something they ARE looking for, there’s like 9 million other trainers that fit that mold- so no need to waste your time with me.
So, in the cases that my clients *have* lost weight & are excited and want to tell me about it- they preface it like I’m going to bite their head off- (I’ve CREATED MONSTERS!) hahhahaa. -
But in all reality, after I feel a tad guilty that they even FELT this way in the first place, I am excited with them and reassure them that I don’t HATE weight loss-
But what I’m doing as a trainer is NOT FOCUSING on it.
I am encouraging my clients (although they are FREE to do whatever they want) to put ‘weight’ on the back burner.
To not allow a number to dictate their day and how they carry themselves, to feel STRONG b/c the completed 2 more pushups than last week and feel ACCOMPLISHED b/c they took shorter rest breaks this week- than 3 weeks prior. -
I WANT TO SHIFT THE FOCUS OFF WEIGHT- and have them realize that they are SO much MORE than a body- while also helping them to make INTERNAL connections to movement.
-
One client told me that her daughter called her a “strong mommy”- and that made her grin from ear to ear.
Another one told me that she is no longer having as much ‘stiffness’ throughout the day and she feels energized.
THIS is what makes movement FUN! Making TONS of connections other than external ones.
To my current & future clients-
I’m here to celebrate YOU for who you are NOW- and no, I’ll never help you hide a body. 😂
