Group fitness Instructor TIP #3: Understand the difference between a ‘teacher’ and a ‘performer’ and know that there are appropriate times to “be” one or the other.
-
When I introduce new moves, I play the role as a teacher.
I focus on breaking down the movement and observing how the students respond. “Is the breakdown too easy, too difficult?- how should I adjust accordingly?
I may play the ‘teacher’ role for several classes (or numerous times during class depending on the students) ‘the teacher’ will make sure various cues are given (verbal, tactile etc) proper form is being executed during this time and then once that happens, I can let go of some of that role while I take on the role of the performer. -
While I am in ‘performer’ mode, I will play with my facial expressions and add a little “umph” to certain moves in a practiced way that flows.
For some instructors, the ‘performer’ may be uncomfortable and that’s okay. I feel as though different instructors go back and forth with these roles individually- and that’s what makes us all unique. -
I also believe that there is a fine line to the ‘performer’ role- Engaging the class, possibly by laughter or by a face or movement whilst not making the class on you- (ie. “I’m going to spend an hour showing them all how AWESOME I AM”)
-
Thoughts on these roles as the student?
Have you ever thought about the various roles your instructor can take on?
